About Library Exposed
Welcome to Library Exposed, an independent, community-driven initiative aimed at fostering thoughtful dialogue on the balance between protecting our children's mental and emotional well-being and upholding free expression in education. We focus on books available in the Rockwood School District that may be viewed as controversial or sensitive, with the goal of informing and empowering our community.
Currently, the district uses an "opt-out" approach, where access to certain materials is automatically granted unless parents actively restrict it. We believe this method is ineffective, as it can leave parents unaware of the content their children are exposed to. Instead, we advocate for an "opt-in" policy, requiring explicit parental consent before students can access certain materials, ensuring a more deliberate and informed process.
Our approach is straightforward: we share selected excerpts from these books without adding personal interpretations, allowing the content to speak for itself. This respects the original work while enabling our community to form their own opinions. Our goal is not to critique the literary merit of these works, but to shed light on content that has raised concern, contributing to a more informed and discerning community.
At Library Exposed, we stand for transparency and informed choice. By advocating for an "opt-in" policy, we aim to create a safer educational environment that respects diverse perspectives. This approach fosters open, constructive dialogue while ensuring students are exposed to a wide range of literary works in a manner that aligns with family values and emotional readiness.
We invite all community members to participate in this crucial conversation, working together to promote an educational environment that supports both the intellectual and emotional development of our children. Let’s join forces to encourage respectful, informed dialogue about school content and ensure a balanced, supportive educational atmosphere for all.
