Summary
City of Ashes is the second book in Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" series, a young adult urban fantasy saga. Following the events of "City of Bones," this installment continues the story of Clary Fray, a teenager who has discovered her heritage as a Shadowhunter—a warrior tasked with protecting the world from demons. As Clary becomes more entwined in the Shadowhunters' world, she faces new and more dangerous challenges.
In "City of Ashes," the Shadowhunter world is in turmoil after the betrayal of Clary's father, Valentine, who seeks to cleanse the world of Downworlders with the Mortal Cup. As Valentine's plans become clearer, Clary, along with her Shadowhunter friends Jace, Alec, and Isabelle, and her best friend Simon, must stop him from using the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, to achieve his destructive goals.
