Melissa

Summary

Melissa, written by Alex Gino, is a children's novel that tells the story of a young trans-identified male. The book follows George as he struggles to express his true identity in a world that doesn't understand or accept him.

George knows deep down that he is a girl, but he doesn't know how to share his feelings with the people around him. When his class prepares for a play based on Charlotte's Web, George knows that this is his chance to show everyone who he really is. He auditions for the role of Charlotte and hopes to play the part as a girl, despite the fact that the role is traditionally played by a boy.

Through his journey, George learns to embrace his true self and to stand up for who he is, even in the face of opposition and misunderstanding.

Published by Scholastic Press, the book is recommended by the publisher for readers aged 8-12 years.
