The 57 Bus

Summary

The 57 Bus is a nonfiction book written by Dashka Slater. The book tells the true story of two teenagers from different backgrounds whose lives intersected on the 57 bus in Oakland, California.

One of the teens, Sasha, is a nonbinary genderqueer high school student who identifies as agender and prefers the pronoun "they." The other teen, Richard, is an African American boy who grew up in a disadvantaged neighborhood. In November 2013, Richard set Sasha's skirt on fire while they were riding on the 57 bus, causing severe burns to Sasha's legs.
