The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Summary

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie and illustrated by Ellen Forney, is a semi-autobiographical young adult novel that explores themes of identity, race, and the struggle to overcome personal and societal barriers. The story is narrated by Arnold "Junior" Spirit, a 14-year-old Spokane Indian who lives on the Wellpinit Indian Reservation in Washington State.

Frustrated with the limited educational opportunities on the reservation, Junior decides to transfer to an all-white public high school off the reservation. He faces numerous challenges, such as being the only Native American student in the school, dealing with racism, and coping with the difficult transition between his life on the reservation and the predominantly white community at his new school.

Published by Little, Brown and Company, the book is recommended by the publisher for readers aged 14 and up.
