The Hate U Give

Summary

The Hate U Give, written by Angie Thomas, is a young adult novel that delves into issues of race, police brutality, and social justice in contemporary America. The story follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old African-American girl who is navigating between her predominantly black, low-income neighborhood and the affluent, predominantly white prep school she attends.

Starr's life is turned upside down when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend, Khalil, by a police officer during a traffic stop. As the only witness, Starr is thrust into the spotlight, facing pressure from her community, the media, and law enforcement.

Published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins, the book is recommended by the publisher for readers aged 14 and up.
