Property of the Rebel Librarian
Summary
Property of the Rebel Librarian by Allison Varnes is a middle-grade novel that explores themes of censorship, the power of books, and standing up for what you believe in. The story follows June Harper, a book-loving twelve-year-old whose life turns upside down when her parents deem the books she loves inappropriate. After her favorite library book is confiscated and a stringent ban on reading materials is enforced at her school, June finds herself at the center of a literary censorship battle.
Feeling stifled and misunderstood, June starts an underground library out of her locker, supplying banned books to her classmates. As she distributes these books, she ignites a passion for reading in her peers and challenges the restrictive policies imposed by the adults. June's actions spark a school-wide, and eventually community-wide, debate about the importance of freedom of expression and the transformative power of literature.
Published by Random House Books for Young Readers, Property of the Rebel Librarian is targeted towards children ages 8 to 12.
